Bold or Subdued - you choose!

Subdued...
Today's post shows you the same scrapbook layout done in two very different styles. This first style is the one we did at my Monthly Stamp Class a few months ago. It has a subdued vintage feel that everyone seemed to really enjoy.

The paper was our Botanical Gazette DSP from the Occasions Mini catalog. The beveled window panes are still available and anyone who receives a project made with one will be touched that such a special piece was used just for them.

We colored the satin vanilla rosette with a Cherry Cobbler marker to match the DSP. To get the effect on the lower half of this frame, we ran the paper through the Big Shot with the Framed Tulips embossing folder, then sanded off the finish with Stampin' Up!s sanding block. Taffeta ribbon in Early Espresso holds the Beveled Windowpane in place.

A light sponging in Crumb Cake ink really makes the dry embossing (done here with the Vintage Wallpaper folder) stand out.

To add to the vintage feel, we sprayed the large DSP flower with water and crumpled it up. Then we unfolded it, let it dry, and sponged it with some Old Olive ink. The smaller flowers are from the Level 1 Hostess Set "Punch Potpurri". We colored each flower with a Stampin' Write marker before stamping, then sponged the edges with matching ink after punching them out with the Boho Blossoms punch.

Layering the Victoria Lace over Cherry Cobbler seam binding creates a rich depth, and the addition of the tiny "love" tag sends it over the top! (Tiny Tags stamp set and Jewelry Tag punch) We even added the smallest Basic Pearl to the "o" in "love"!

You will love this technique if you already own the Framed Tulips embossing folder, and if you don't already have it, you're going to want it now! Run the card stock through the Big Shot once with the Framed Tulips folder as usual. Next, rotate the card stock 90 degrees, carefully lining up the side vertical columns of flowers and run it through your Big Shot just far enough to get the second horizontal row f tulips. Wa-lah! You have a square frame instead of a rectangle. (I did not invent this technique, but I can't remember whose blog I got it from!)

Bold!
I just love the Sweet and Sour Specialty paper in the 2010-2011 Idea Book and Catalog. It pairs up two fun colors: Rose Red and Pumpkin Pie. This was the original layout I had designed for class, but I thought it might be too bold for some. Of course, when I showed it at class, half of my guests said, "Oh, I would have loved that one!" The Sweet and Sour paper is available through the end of June, so there's still time to recreate this yourself!

The swirly border was created using the Swirly Decorative Strip and the Big Shot. That's 5/8" grosgrain ribbon in Pumpkin Pie wrapped around the corners of the photo mat.

Don't you love the effect you get when you use the Corner Rounder punch on just two diagonal corners?

The Ornate Blossom stamp seen here is only $9.95 and coordinates with the Friends Never Fade stamp set as well as the Greenhouse Gala DSP.

To create the lacy edge I used the Scallop Trim corner and border punches and followed the guidelines that Gretchen Barron was kind enough to share with the rest of us.

The orange lace border set on the diagonal was done in the same way.

So, which do you prefer? Bold and bright, or soft and subdued?

Creating scrapbook layouts in My Digital Studio

I've been dying to play around more with My Digital Studio (MDS) which is Stampin' Up!'s digital software. I've used it before to create my blog banner and background, as well as some cards and postcard style invitations, but I hadn't created any scrapbook pages with it yet.

It comes with some designer layouts and all you have to do is choose which pictures you want to add and where to add them. These five pages took me less than five minutes!
Since my printer obviously does not print out 12" x 12" pages, I decided to try out Stampin' Up!s professional print service for the first time since prints are on sale this month for National Scrapbooking Month. My prints should arrive on Thursday, so I'll let you know what I think of them then.
I think these page layouts are adorable! They're very different from my usual style - it's good to diversify - and I don't know if I would have come up with these combinations of page elements or layouts on my own in MDS, so I really appreciate the Designer Layout option. Of course you can change them up how ever you want, or start from scratch if you don't want to use the layouts that Stampin' Up! provides.

Here are the details on the discounts for the month of May:

Vintage-y Botanical Gazette

I created this layout as a Hostess Gift for my Hostess, Heather L. last month using the Botanical Gazette paper from the Occasions Mini Catalog. I knew she loved a vintage feel, butterflies, and dry embossing done with the Big Shot. She was thrilled. Thanks for hosting, Heather!

There was so little I had to do to make this page complete. All of the shading and the large botanical image were preprinted on the Botanical Gazette paper. I added a mat for a 5"x7" picture and some leaves from the Little Leaves Sizzlet die in Old Olive and sponged with Pear Pizazz ink to frame the mat. The sentiment "Note" is from the Details stamp set in the Occasions Mini as well.

This page will hold three 4"x6" pictures that have been cropped to 3.5"x5.5". I sponged the edges of the Very Vanilla card stock in Daffodil Delight ink. I did a freehand tear of the butterfly Botanical Gazette paper and distressed the edge slightly. To get the continuous panel of Certainly Celery, I used the Vintage Wallpaper embossing folder to emboss one section, scooted the folder over to the center of the panel, then carefully lined up the pattern and embossed again. I repeated the steps one more time to emboss the other end of the panel and wah-lah! A continuously embossed panel that spans the width of the page.

If you want to experiment with this technique, I recommend trying it first with the Polka Dot embossing folder. It's the easiest one to line up the pattern again.

To create the butterflies I used the Beautiful Butterflies Big Shot die, embossed them using the Vintage Wallpaper embossing folder, then sponged the edges and the raised pattern using Pear Pizazz ink. For the smaller butterflies I used the Beautiful Wings embosslit, which cuts and embosses in one easy step. I used Daffodil Delight ink to sponge the Daffodil Delight butterflies. Some of the large butterflies received an Antique Brad while the smaller ones were decorated with our adhesive backed Pearls.

To attach the lace ribbon I used my hobby blade to create a small incision through the Very Vanilla card stock that would be hidden by the panel of Certainly Celery card stock that traverses the page. I slid the ribbon through the incision, wrapped the other end around the top of the page, skipped them through the Beveled Window Pane and tied the ends off with some Linen Thread.
